The words seem to be banging around in my head, so I wanted to let them out. I want to take a moment to talk about How You View Divination.
Or, more to the point, how I do, along with some other possibilities.
I’ve made mention of this sort of thing in other posts, but I wanted it to have it’s own specific article, and it might be a better place to start than the Start Here post.
There’s two really good, really Short, REALLY MEMORABLE phrases to go by when doing divination:
You Do You.
Karma is a bitch – and divination will amplify that shit 100 fold, so keep that in mind – hence the Harm None. You go into this looking for revenge or some such it’s going to be akin to getting a face full of acid – and that is not fun times for anyone.
I’ve mentioned before, but Melissa Cynova’s Kitchen Table Tarot is a great starter book (and not just for Tarot specifically, but divination in general), and she covers a lot of this in that. The short version is “Find what works for you, and run with it.” Just be nice to your cards. You don’t want hair, gum, wine, sweat, etc. messing up the cards – at the worst you’ll piss off your deck, at the least the card stock’ll disintegrate and they won’t work anyway because you’ll be physically unable to use them. (Also the Mystical Manga Guidebook mirrors a lot of Melissa’s views and comes with a deck that is just stunningly beautiful.)
Cleansing: Do, or don’t – it goes back to following your gut. I don’t do it regularly, but every now and then I get this weird vibe and I just know it’s time to do the thing. Whatever feels right to you my best advice is just make sure it doesn’t damage the cards and/or you don’t run the risk of some critter running off with one or two pieces of card stock. Incomplete decks or rune sets aren’t going to do you much good.
Most people who get into Divination believe in magic, gods, spirits, ancestors, etc. of some variety. The details can vary from soul to soul, but unless you’re a full blown skeptic, then chances are some of that’s in there somewhere.
I have my beliefs, and I won’t get into them here, but I have some logic for the people out there maybe struggling to believe. Maybe you’re trying to be supportive of a friend or loved one, maybe you want to believe but well – let’s be fair – society doesn’t make it easy to do. At least not publicly.
Look at it mathematically. If you can take a new deck of 52 cards, shuffle them properly, and end up with a sequence never seen before and never to be seen again, then imagine doing that with 78 cards. Putting a tarot deck back in “new” order is one of the ways to cleanse it, so even if you did that process after every read there’s no statistically likely possibility that the cards will play out the same way a second time in your lifetime.
Those cards, in that order, in that spread, are meant exactly for that moment.
Sometimes they won’t make sense for the question asked, shuffle again, try again. Don’t think of it as a failure – the cards/runes are a means of communication – and we all have instances of communicating where it doesn’t make sense. Basically give your medium, and yourself, a chance to put things a different way. I know I have to explain things 3 or 4 times at work before some people catch on – it’s the same with divination.
The same works for Runes as well. Once you bring the variable of either having a set spread, just upturning the bag, or tossing them into the air – you’re creating circumstances that are statistically impossible to repeat.
Those Runes, in those locations, are meant exactly for that moment.
You could do eight readings a day, 7 days a week, and live to be 1000 and never see the same spread twice.
You could also see the same exact spread, for the same exact person, on the same exact day. If that happens, I suggest paying attention. Something is trying it’s damnedest to get your attention – whether you believe in it or not.
My personal hold is a kind of a mix of both. I believe in My People™ (Spirits, Ancestors, Gods), and I believe in the vast expanse of the Universe. I also believe Math is pretty much the language to end all languages. So sometimes my cards/runes are My People™ talking to me, sometimes it’s the Universe – either way, I’m the conduit/door/-translator/etc. and I have a responsibility to see clearly, and convey clearly.
Whether a reading is for myself or others.
However you look at it, however you practice it, Be Kind. There’s enough people out there being Not Kind, don’t add to that. Remember to be Kind to yourself and others.
